Debbie Wade-Wilson, school nurse at Confluence Preparatory Academy, said this year, the district is participating in the Vaccine for Children program.

“Any student with MOHealthnet or Medicaid insurance, no insurance, or is underinsured who is 18 years of age or younger will receive the vaccine for free through the state program,” said Wade-Wilson. “The district has agreed to pick up the cost of the vaccine for any other student who may have private insurance.”

The vaccine comes in two forms – a nasal mist or an injection. Most children will be able to get the nasal mist.

“We encourage all of the students to get the flu vaccine, from 5 years old through 18 years of age, especially those who have illnesses that can cause them to become very ill from the flu, such as asthmatics,” she continued.

Students who should not get the flu shot include those who have a severe allergy to eggs, egg products, formaldehyde, thimerosal, vaccine components or latex. School nurses will review the parent consent form to ensure that students who cannot get the vaccine are referred to a doctor.

School staff is encouraged to get the flu vaccine. There is a $12 charge. Payments can be made with check or cash.
