Confluence Preparatory Academy is encouraging students and parents to register to vote.

On Tuesday, October 2, the school will have a voter registration event for students who will be eligible to vote in the November election. The registration event will take place during the last class of the day, from 2:06 to 3:00 p.m. in the library.

The event is non-partisan and is being organized by teachers Ms. Deanna Tamborelli and Ms. Jennifer Luker. Guest speakers will discuss the importance of voting, the candidates and ballot initiatives in the “hopes of educating students about the important decisions taking place locally and nationally.”

Parents and community members are invited to register to vote at CPA after the student event, from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m.

The Missouri Secretary of State’s website explains voter registration qualifications: you must be 17 ½ years of age to register and 18 years of age to vote, be a U.S. citizen and a Missouri resident.

Participants are asked to bring a valid Missouri driver's license or the last four numbers of their social security number to register.

Tamborelli and Luker said there is a plan to follow up with students to encourage them to vote on Election Day.

“We are doing a mock election at school before the real election to help students understand the candidates and the ballot initiatives.”

Social science teachers will address voting rights for other elections, such as local and state elections that do not often have high voter turnout.

Confluence Preparatory Academy is located at 310 North 15th Street.
