To celebrate the history, culture and influence of African Americans, Confluence Charter Schools will highlight Black History Month with events and activities for students and families.


Confluence Academy-Old North

            February 19     PTO Meeting, Black History Living Museum, 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
                                    Fifth-grade students will share their knowledge of famous African
                                    Americans by dressing in character and reciting facts.


February 26     Black History Program
                                    Students will present historical readings, as well as performances by the
                                    choir, step team and dance team.

Gr. K-4, 9:00 a.m.
Gr. 5-8, 2:00 p.m.


            February 27     African American Read-In, 8:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.

Guest readers will visit classrooms to read books by African American authors in a celebration of African American literature. The read-in is part of the 26th National African American Read-In.


            March 6-7        Old North Goes to Memphis

                                    For the second consecutive year, students will visit Memphis to
                                    experience the National Civil Rights Museum, tour a college campus and
                                    attend a Memphis Grizzlies NBA game.


Confluence Academy-South City

February 24     Black History Program, 5:30 p.m.
            South City will celebrate with performances by teachers and students,
            focusing on leaders and contributors to black history.


Confluence Academy-Walnut Park

February 24     Black History Program, 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Students will showcase class work and present group performances in recognition of black history.

      February 27     Spelling and Math Bee, 8:00 a.m.

Confluence Preparatory Academy

            February 27     Black History Program, 2:00 p.m.
                                    Students and staff will present readings and performances.


Each day of the month, CPA Student Government will present trivia questions about black history for students to win weekly prizes.


Grand Center Arts Academy

            February 12     Author Visit, Kadir Nelson, 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.

Students in visual arts and language arts classes will hear author and illustrator Kadir Nelson speak in the Sun Theatre.


February 26     GCAA Presents: A Celebration of Black History, 6:30 p.m.

Students in art, dance, theatre and music will perform in recognition of black history. Tickets are $5.
