Confluence Charter Schools will provide free after-school tutoring for students in third through eighth grade. The session begins November 5 and will continue through April 6.

Tutoring sessions will take place at Confluence Academy-Old North, Confluence Academy-South City and Confluence Academy-Walnut Park.

After-school tutoring is voluntary, but students must be committed to working hard. Tutoring will be held Monday and Tuesday from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. Bus transportation and a snack will be provided.

Saturday tutoring begins November 10. Sessions are from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Parents must provide transportation.

The purpose of the program is to help students improve academic skills. Tutoring will be coordinated with what is being taught in class, focusing on communication arts and math. The program will use instructional approaches such as skill-building through use of computers, experimental learning activities and hands-on activities.

Joyce Jefferson, after-school program coordinator, explained how the program will impact students.

“Students will receive extra help in academic areas of deficiency, and instruction is provided in small groups,” said Jefferson.

Tutoring can benefit all students, Jefferson said. “It is good for students who are excelling, as they will be challenged at higher levels. And of course, it is most beneficial for those students who need the extra help.”

Teachers, district tutors and college students will work with the students.
